So what does this involve?
Well, you will complete a 17 day full-time (Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm) training course giving you the skills and knowledge required to work as a Fitness Instructor in a health club, leisure centre or hotel gym. You'll also gain the skills you need to assist in reception, help out in membership sales and make customers feel welcome. You'll also walk away with a Certficate in First Aid, something you need to work in a gym.
What will I learn?
You'll be taught about anatomy and physiology and how to exercise safely and effectively using a wide range of gym equipment. You will then learn how to motivate others to enjoy exercise and achieve their fitness goals. You'll also learn about first aid, health and safety, customer service, membership sales and you'll get to know loads about the industry.
When do I start work?
Once you've completed a 17 day course we will assist you in finding a job role to carry out the practical element of your Apprenticeship*. You will be paid an Apprenticeship wage whilst working in a gym or leisure centre gaining that all important work experience and putting your skills to the test in a real work environment. Minimum working hours will apply** and you will be paid to earn while you learn.
What would I earn?
Once fully qualified and your Apprenticeship is complete, you could earn up to £16,000 as a Fitness Instructor. During your Apprenticeship you will be paid an Apprenticeship salary, during which time you will gain valuable work experience and achieve your NVQ in Fitness Instruction.
How long is the working day?
Fitness Instructors usually work 40 hours a week or part time as required. It is typically shift work, for example 6am-2pm, 11am-7pm or 2pm-10pm.
What's involved?
The majority of a Fitness Instructor's time is spent on the gym floor talking to customers and helping them with their exercise programmes and generally keeping the gym in good working order. You will be responsible for walking new customers through lifestyle questionnaires and performing health screening and initial induction sessions. You will often have the opportunity to learn to teach groups on the gym floor and, in cases, circuits and indoor cycling.
What are the career opportunities?
There are a wide range of routes you can take after you complete this Apprenticeship because of the varied subject matter on the course. You could continue along a fitness route and train to be a personal trainer. If you decide fitness isn't for you, you could work in membership as a sales advisor.
If you are working within a leisure centre you could explore opportunities to become a sports coach assistant, activity leader, leisure attendant or leisure operations assistant. With this multi-skilled Apprenticeship the options are endless!
